Schools are often the deciding factor for families moving to Cyprus. Get the school choice right and the whole relocation falls into place. Get it wrong, or miss a waiting list, and you are scrambling. This guide covers what actually exists, what it costs, and the timing traps you need to avoid.
Your Three Options
Expat families in Cyprus choose between private English-language schools, international schools following the IB curriculum, and Greek public schools. The vast majority of British families opt for private English-language schools following the Cambridge IGCSE and A-Level pathway.
What Is Available and Where
Paphos is served primarily by Falcon School, which follows the Cambridge pathway and is experienced at welcoming new arrivals. Paphos has a large established British expat community.
Limassol has grown fastest as an expat hub. Foley's Grammar School and several smaller private schools serve the community. Demand has been outstripping supply in recent years, so contact schools early.
Nicosia has the widest choice, including selective English-language schools and the American International School with a full IB programme.
Larnaca is often overlooked but offers strong value, fewer expats competing for places, and lower property costs.
Fees
Private English-language school fees in Cyprus are lower than comparable private schools in the UK, particularly outside London. Fees vary by school and year group. Most schools charge separately for trips, uniforms, and extracurricular activities. Greek public schools are free but teach entirely in Greek, which rules them out for most newly arrived British families at secondary level.
Waiting Lists
The most popular schools in Limassol and Paphos have waiting lists for certain year groups. Do not assume you can enrol at short notice. Contact schools before you relocate, ideally well ahead of your planned move date.
University Pathways
Cambridge IGCSE and A-Level qualifications from Cyprus are identical to those sat in the UK. UCAS accepts them without question. British universities treat Cyprus A-Level students the same as UK-based applicants. The IB Diploma is accepted globally including at Russell Group universities.
