Cyprus launched its Digital Nomad Visa targeting remote workers from non-EU countries who work for employers or clients based outside Cyprus. It is a straightforward route to legal residence, but it has important limitations that make it the right choice for some people and the wrong choice for others.
What It Covers
The Digital Nomad Visa is a temporary residence permit for non-EU nationals who work remotely for employers or clients located outside Cyprus. It runs for an initial period with one possible renewal. Your spouse and dependent children can accompany you as dependents, though they cannot work in Cyprus during the permit period.
Who It Works For
Good For
- Non-EU remote workers who want to live in Cyprus legally for a defined period
- People testing Cyprus before committing to a longer-term structure
- Single professionals with a stable remote income
Not Ideal For
- Anyone planning to stay long-term. There is no onward path from this permit
- Business owners who want to operate a Cyprus company. This is not permitted under this visa
- EU citizens. You have full right of residence and do not need this permit
The Tax Position
If you spend more than 183 days in Cyprus in a calendar year, you become a Cyprus tax resident. If you have not been a Cyprus tax resident for the past 10 years, you automatically qualify for non-dom status. This means dividends and interest are exempt from Special Defence Contribution.
Employment income is still taxed at normal Cyprus income tax rates. Cyprus income tax starts at 0% up to €22,000, which is lower than most Northern European countries, but it is not zero for incomes above that threshold.
The Digital Nomad Visa cannot be renewed indefinitely. After the maximum period, you need to transition to a different residency status: temporary residency, employment by a Cyprus company, or another permit type. The transition takes time to plan and process. Do not leave it to the last moment.
Arriving in Cyprus as a Remote Worker?
The Digital Nomad Visa works well as an entry point. A call helps you understand the tax implications and plan the transition to longer-term residency when the time comes.
