The Pink Slip is the colloquial name for Cyprus's Temporary Residence Permit for non-EU nationals. It is the most common route for UK nationals, Americans, and other third-country nationals who want to live in Cyprus legally for more than 90 days. Despite the name, the permit itself is now a biometric card.
Who Needs a Pink Slip?
Any non-EU national who wants to live in Cyprus for more than 90 days in a 180-day period. This includes UK nationals (since Brexit), US, Canadian, Australian, and other non-EU passport holders, and retirees living on passive income. EU nationals do not need a Pink Slip and register separately as EU citizens.
The Income Requirement
You need to demonstrate stable, provable income from outside Cyprus above the minimum annual threshold. The Civil Registry and Migration Department will check bank statements, pension letters, employment contracts, or dividend records to verify it. Income from employment inside Cyprus does not count unless you hold a separate work permit. Qualifying sources include overseas pensions, foreign employment salaries, rental income from property abroad, and dividends or interest from investments. Dependants increase the required income.
You also need to hold a minimum balance in a Cyprus bank account at the time of application.
The Application Process
- Open a Cyprus bank account with the required minimum deposit
- Secure accommodation with a rental agreement or ownership documents
- Obtain private health insurance valid in Cyprus
- Gather proof of income: several months of bank statements, pension letters, or payslips
- Submit the application form to the CRMD in person, with original documents and certified translations where needed
- Attend the biometric appointment when notified
- Receive your residence card
Renewal and the Path to Permanent Residency
The Pink Slip is issued for one year and renewed annually. After five consecutive years of legal residence in Cyprus you become eligible to apply for permanent residency under the standard route. You cannot be absent from Cyprus for extended consecutive periods without affecting the continuity of your residence record. A fast-track investment-based permanent residency route is also available at any time for those who meet the property purchase requirement.
Not without a separate work or employment permit. The Pink Slip for financially independent persons covers living in Cyprus, not working here. If you want to work or run a business in Cyprus, different permit categories apply.
Not Sure If You Qualify?
The income requirement catches many applicants by surprise. A short call to review your income sources, bank statements, and documents can save months of delay or a rejected application.
