Moving to Cyprus in 2026: What Nobody Tells You

By Kleanthis Sokratous July 2026 7 min read

People who settle quickly in Cyprus arrived with a plan. People who struggled followed generic guides written by people who had never done it. The difference is almost always preparation and sequence.

Before You Leave

Choose your residency route before anything else. Cyprus has several permit types and the right one depends on your passport, income type, and whether you plan to buy property. Picking the wrong route means starting again.

Get your documents apostilled in your home country. Cyprus accepts foreign documents only with an apostille stamp. Bank statements, income proof, and criminal record checks all need apostilles before you leave. In the UK this goes through the FCDO and takes a few weeks. Without it your residency application cannot be submitted.

If you have UK tax obligations, notify HMRC of your departure date before you go. The date you give HMRC determines when your UK tax liability ends. Getting this wrong creates a tax overlap that takes specialist help to resolve.

On Arrival

Open your Cyprus bank account immediately. You need it for your residency permit application and almost every other administrative step. Allow more time than you expect. Get your Tax Identification Number registered in the first week. Register for healthcare once your permit is approved.

The Sequence Matters

Every step in Cyprus feeds the next one. Residency permit requires a bank account and health insurance. Tax residency requires a permit. Non-dom status requires tax residency. Doing things out of order means delays, extra costs, and sometimes starting again. The people who get it right understand the sequence before they move.
