Can I Retire in Cyprus on a UK Pension?

By Kleanthis Sokratous July 2026 4 min read

Yes, and thousands of British retirees do exactly that. Cyprus is home to one of the largest UK expat communities in the EU. The combination of sunshine, affordable living, and a straightforward tax position on pension income is a genuine draw.

The question is not whether you can retire here on a UK pension. The question is whether your pension income meets the residency threshold, how it will be taxed, and what life actually costs once you arrive.

The Income Threshold

To obtain a Pink Slip as a financially independent retiree, you need to demonstrate stable annual income from outside Cyprus above the minimum threshold. Income can come from a combination of sources: UK state pension, private or occupational pension, rental income from a UK property, interest from savings, or dividends from investments. Dependants increase the required income. You also need to hold a minimum balance in a Cyprus bank account at the time of application.

The UK state pension alone typically falls below the minimum threshold. Most retirees combine it with a private pension, a defined benefit scheme, or rental income from a UK property they kept.

Will HMRC Still Tax My Pension?

Cyprus and the UK have a Double Taxation Agreement. Once you become a Cyprus tax resident, your pension is taxed in Cyprus, not the UK. Cyprus income tax starts at 0% up to €22,000. Above that, rates rise gradually. Cyprus also allows non-Cypriot pension income to be taxed at a lower flat rate option rather than the graduated scale. You elect this when filing your Cyprus tax return.

You need to complete a UK P85 form to notify HMRC of your departure and stop your UK tax liability. Your pension provider will need a no-tax coding notification from HMRC once this is confirmed.

What Life Actually Costs

A comfortable retired couple in Paphos or Limassol can live well at a materially lower cost than the equivalent lifestyle in southern England. Rent, groceries, utilities, eating out, and a car are all cheaper. GESY, the national health system, gives access to GPs, specialists, hospitals, and most medications at very low cost. The contribution is based on a percentage of your income. Private health insurance is also available for those who want faster access or international coverage.

Do I Pay Tax Twice?

No. The UK-Cyprus Double Taxation Agreement prevents this. Once you are a Cyprus tax resident, your pension is taxed only in Cyprus. Notify HMRC via P85 to confirm your departure and stop UK taxation.
