Category F is the residence permit most commonly associated with Cyprus for financially independent non-EU nationals. If you are researching it, there are two things most guides do not make clear.
Category F is not permanent residency. It is a renewable temporary permit. Processing times are long and there is no priority lane. The fast-track investment route grants permanent residency far more quickly.
What Category F Actually Is
Category F is a temporary residence permit for non-EU nationals who can show sufficient income from abroad to support themselves without working in Cyprus. The permit is issued initially for one year and is renewable annually. After five years of continuous legal residence, holders can apply for permanent residency through the standard long-term route. The CRMD assesses each application individually and there is no guaranteed outcome.
Income Requirements
The income must be passive and sourced from outside Cyprus: dividends, rental income, pensions, or interest. It cannot derive from employment or business activity in Cyprus. The CRMD wants to see a clean, consistent income history. Gaps, inconsistencies, or income that resembles freelance work will trigger queries and slow your application.
Your Status While You Wait
You do not need to leave Cyprus while your application is pending. Most applicants hold a temporary permit in parallel, which provides legal residence while the main application progresses. This also allows you to open bank accounts, establish tax residency, and access non-dom status while you wait.
