Cyprus introduced its Digital Nomad Visa for remote workers from non-EU countries who work for employers or clients based outside Cyprus. The requirements are straightforward, and Cyprus is a genuinely liveable base. English is widely spoken, infrastructure is solid, and the weather is excellent for most of the year.
Core Requirements
To qualify you need to be a non-EU national working remotely for employers or clients based outside Cyprus. You need a minimum provable income, comprehensive health insurance that covers Cyprus, a clean criminal record, and a formal lease or property in Cyprus. Dependants can accompany you as residents but cannot work in Cyprus under this permit.
The non-Cypriot employer rule is firm. Working for a Cyprus company or providing services to Cypriot clients is not permitted under this category. If you want to operate a Cyprus company, a different permit structure is needed.
Documents and Application
You need bank statements showing your income, your employment contract or client agreements, an employer letter confirming remote working permission, your health insurance policy, and proof of accommodation. Freelancers also need registration documents and recent invoices. Anything not in English or Greek needs a certified translation. Applications are submitted in person at the Civil Registry and Migration Department.
Applications fail most often due to income documentation that does not clearly show the net figure, employer letters that are too vague, or health insurance with exclusions the CRMD considers insufficient. Prepare clean documents from the start.
The Tax Question Most Guides Skip
If you spend more than 183 days in Cyprus in a calendar year, you become a Cyprus tax resident. Your worldwide income becomes taxable in Cyprus. The first €22,000 is tax-free and rates go up to 35%. If this is your first time as a Cyprus tax resident, you automatically qualify for non-dom status, which means dividends and interest are exempt from Special Defence Contribution.
If you stay under 183 days, you do not trigger Cyprus tax residency under the standard rule. But you remain tax resident somewhere. Do not assume the visa resolves your tax position. It addresses immigration status only.
Cyprus also has a 60-day rule for tax residency. Under this route you can qualify as a Cyprus tax resident with only 60 days of presence, provided you are not tax resident elsewhere, you maintain a home in Cyprus, and you have a Cyprus business or employment connection. This is a legitimate path but requires careful structuring.
After the Visa Period
The permit is renewable once. After the maximum period, you cannot continue on this category. At that point you can apply for temporary residency, establish a Cyprus company which creates a different legal basis for residence, or apply for investment-based permanent residency if you meet the property purchase requirement. Plan the transition well before the renewal expires.
