What Non-Dom Status Does
Non-dom status exempts you from the Special Defence Contribution on dividend and interest income. The rate drops to 0% with no cap on the amount. Dividends from any company or source worldwide qualify. Capital gains on shares are also 0% under separate rules. Non-dom does not exempt employment or self-employment income, which remains subject to standard income tax rates.
Who Qualifies
The test is straightforward: you must not have been a Cyprus tax resident during the 10 years before your first year of Cyprus tax residency. If you have never lived in Cyprus before, you qualify from day one. Nationality does not matter. Non-dom status applies when you file your Cyprus tax return, provided you meet the conditions.
What the 2026 Reform Changed
Non-dom status was extended from 10 to 17 years. This applies to new claimants and extended the remaining period for existing holders. The reform also removed the dual-residency restriction that previously created problems for UK nationals still connected to the UK tax system. Cyprus now looks only at Cyprus-side conditions.
Qualifying as a Cyprus Tax Resident
To claim non-dom status you must first be a Cyprus tax resident. The standard route requires 183 days of physical presence. Cyprus also has a 60-day rule that allows people who maintain a Cyprus home and a business or employment connection to qualify on fewer days. The conditions matter and need to be right from the start.
